Guilford County voters cast 141,132 early ballots in person, 39% more than in the 2022 midterm. Under-25 voters doubled their share. Totals by site and day.

Guilford County voters cast 141,132 ballots in person during early voting, which ended Saturday. That is 39% more than the 101,202 early ballots cast in the county in the last midterm, in 2022.

The figures come from the N.C. State Board of Elections absentee and early voting file for the Nov. 3 election. We counted the accepted early voting ballots in the copy the state published Monday, Nov. 2. The 2022 figure comes from the state’s final file for that election.

Today is Election Day. Polls are open 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and you must vote at your own assigned precinct. Early voting sites are closed.

Who voted early

Voters under 25 cast 12,659 early ballots, or 9.0% of the total. In 2022 they cast 4,944, or 4.9%.

Same-day registration also rose. The state file marks 2,863 early voters in Guilford County who registered and voted at the same visit, against 1,635 in 2022.

By party registration, which says nothing about how anyone voted:

  • Democrats: 66,924 early voters, or 47.4%, up from 46,701 in 2022
  • Unaffiliated: 44,514, or 31.5%, up from 25,985
  • Republicans: 29,256, or 20.7%, up from 28,253
  • Libertarian and Green: 438 together

Unaffiliated voters made up the fastest-growing group, up 71% on 2022.

The state had also accepted 3,972 mail ballots from Guilford County voters by Nov. 2. Mail ballots must reach the Board of Elections by 7:30 p.m. today.

Why the numbers differ from our first count

On Oct. 18 we reported 20,788 ballots on the first two days. The Nov. 2 file puts those two days at 20,962. The state adds ballots to each day as the county finishes processing them, so the final figures can still move by a small amount.

The state file does not give turnout as a share of registered voters, so we have not calculated one.
