Food Lion says it spent more than $270 million on 94 Greensboro and Triad stores, adding self-checkout to nearly all. It also gave $375,000 to three local hunger groups.

Food Lion says it has spent more than $270 million on 94 stores across Greater Greensboro and the Triad. Nearly all of them are getting self-checkout lanes.

The Salisbury-based grocer announced the investment in a news release on Wednesday, Nov. 4. The total includes two new stores that opened earlier this year, one in Greensboro and one in Summerfield, about eight miles north.

The 94 stores are spread across the wider Triad region, not only the city. The release does not say how the money is split between them.

What changed in the stores

Food Lion said the remodeled stores have:

  • self-checkout lanes in nearly all stores, alongside cashier lanes
  • LED lighting and refrigerated cases with doors, to cut energy use
  • a wider range of ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat meals, fresh produce, organic, gluten-free and plant-based items
  • pickup and home delivery through Food Lion To Go, ordered online or in the app
  • regional products from North Carolina growers and makers under its Local Goodness program

The company said the changes came from customer and employee feedback.

“Food Lion has proudly served the Greater Greensboro and Triad communities for more than 50 years,” Food Lion President Greg Finchum said in the release.

$375,000 for local hunger relief

Food Lion Feeds, the company’s hunger-relief program, gave $375,000 to three organizations in the area:

Organization Amount What it pays for
Phillips Community Market $225,000 Its client-choice pantry, distribution center and nutrition education center
Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater Triad $100,000 An on-site pantry serving several clubs
Backpack Beginnings $50,000 Its work against childhood hunger

The release also said Food Lion employees have volunteered more than 8,400 hours with feeding partners in the Greensboro and Triad area since 2025. Greensboro-area stores have donated more than 10 million pounds of unsold but edible food to Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina over the same period.

What it means for you

Grand reopening events started at participating stores on Nov. 4. Food Lion said scratch tickets for prizes are handed out at the register through Tuesday, Nov. 10.

If you prefer a staffed checkout, the company said cashier lanes stay alongside the new self-checkouts.
