The leash rule
Animal control in Greensboro is handled by the county: Guilford County Animal Control enforces state law and county animal ordinances in the City of Greensboro, Jamestown and the county’s rural areas, according to the county.
The county’s Section 5-9, “Animals running at large prohibited,” says that in incorporated areas, which include Greensboro, no one may keep an animal other than a cat on or off their property unless it is under physical restraint such as a leash, inside a vehicle or contained by a fence or other secure enclosure. An invisible fence counts only if a visible, permanent sign on the property says one is in use. Animal Control can take animals found running at large to the county shelter.
The county says the most common fine starts at $100 for a first ordinance violation, and some violations carry fines of up to $500 per incident per animal. Animal Control’s office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday; after hours it answers only calls about sick, injured or vicious animals. Call your police non-emergency line after hours, or 911 in an emergency.
