The fireworks

DGI’s 2026 announcement promised “a fireworks finale to cap off the day” on July 4. In earlier years, DGI has said the fireworks follow the Greensboro Grasshoppers’ July 4 home game, and that to watch from inside First National Bank Field you must buy a ticket to the 6:30 p.m. game in advance, according to its Fun Fourth release. Tickets are sold through the Grasshoppers’ ticket page.

Road closures and rules

For the Friday block party in 2026, DGI said:

  • Elm Street closed from Smyres Place to Washington Street.
  • McGee Street closed from Holliday Circle to the train tracks.

New in 2026, the city set a clear bag policy inside the festival footprint. Bags, purses, totes and backpacks had to be clear. Diaper bags, medically necessary bags and other accommodations the law requires could be allowed after inspection, and security could inspect or refuse any bag.

Planning for 2027

  • DGI posts the lineup and an event map on its Fun Fourth page.
  • Freedom Run registration opens on RunSignup once DGI announces the race.
  • For the Grasshoppers’ July 4 game, buy tickets early.
  • Leave consumer fireworks to the professionals, and call 911 for a fire or injury.

What this means for you

  • Fun Fourth is free; the ballpark seat for the fireworks is not.
  • Park early; downtown streets close for the festival.
  • Bring a clear bag.
